Acclaimed film Sonita, winner of both the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award in the World Cinema Documentary category, heads our next Weekend Film Series on Sunday, April 17 (3pm)
Filmmaker Rokhsareh Ghaem Maghami tells the inspirational and courageous story of spirited 18-year-old Sonita, an undocumented Afghan illegal immigrant in Iran who fights to live the way she wants – as an artist, singer and musician – in spite of all the obstacles she faces, including her conservative, patriarchal family.
French film My Golden Days (5.15pm) is another award winner, having won the SACD Prize during Directors’ Fortnight at the Cannes Film Festival. Director Arnaud Desplechin won a Cesar Award in France for Best Director for this coming-of-age tale full of humour, heartbreak, and ravishing romance. The film features stunning performances from newcomers Quentin Domaire as young Paul, and Lou Roy-Lecollinet as the unforgettable Esther.
Both films will screen in the Tradewinds Auditorium of the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute.
